An endemic harlequin toad found only in the Pacific lowlands and foothills of the Cordillera Occidental.
Described in 1914 in honor of zoologist H. G. F. Spurrell, this species uses a potent tetrodotoxin in its skin as a defense. Due to habitat loss, it is currently listed as Near Threatened by the IUCN.
